18th National Timber Bridge Design Competition

The National Timber Bridge Design Competition is open to student chapters of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Forest Products Society (FPS) in the United States and Canada. Joint or cooperative entries (ASCE and FPS working together) are eligible and even encouraged. A chapter may also submit multiple entries. (ARCE is a member of ACI of ASCE).

Grad School Partnership and Teach for America

10/15 at 5PM: “Science Education: Balancing the Equation” webinar coming up this Thursday, October 15th, at 5PM PST. On the call students will be able to engage with corps members and alumni in the sciences about the opportunity science majors have to help solve the inequality in science education. More information about grad school partnerships (Berkeley Engineering, Cal Tech Bio, MIT Chemistry, etc) will also be discussed on the call. If you can make it, just RSVP ahead of time and log-in on your computer a few minutes before it starts on the day its happening.

10/28: Next application deadline for Teach For America. Accepted students would go through a summer training this summer and start teaching next fall. It just takes a resume and a cover letter to apply. All majors, full salary and benefits.

 

SEI/ASCE Student Structural Design Competition

The Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE is sponsoring a structural design competition for universities.

Innovative projects demonstrating excellenc3e in structural engineering are invited for submission.

Awards include cash prizes and an opportunity to present the designs at the 2010 SEI Structures Congress in Orlando, Florida May 12-15, 2010.

AEI/ASCE Student Competition

The Architectural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers is pleased to announce the ASCE Charles Pankow Foundation Annual Architectural Engineering Student Competition.  The theme of the competition is the design and construction management of the engineered aspects of a building project including the structural systems, building envelope, mechanical systems and electrical systems.  The competition design circumstances are picked to elicit the kinds of ingenuity, innovativeness, and originality of work approach that have characterized the Charles Pankow legacy.

The competition is open to both graduate and undergraduate students in accredited architectural engineering programs and programs actively seeking accreditation by EAC/ABET, supervised and advised by faculty.   Submissions may be entered in one or more of the following five categories: structural system design; mechanical systems design; electrical systems design; building integration; and innovative construction management and construction methods. Teams may include from one to five participants.  A team may enter in more than one category.  Each program may have several teams competing.

What's Next: 8th Annual Ability One Network Design Challenge

The Ability One Network Design Challenge (formerly the National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation & Design Competition) was founded by NISH to encourage the development of creative technological solutions for barriers that prevent people with disabilities from entering or advancing in the workplace.  The Design Challenge is open to any college student or student team at the graduate or undergraduate level and is a great service learning opportunity for engineering, computer science, industrial design, physical therapy and occupational therapy students!
